Fetus – In Fetu Case

 
H.K., a 2.5-month old female presented to the clinic of Pediatric Oncology, South Egypt Cancer Institute, because of a big abdominal mass. Plain x-ray abdomen showed soft tissue mass with calcification inside. CT abdomen suggested right renal mass mostly Willm’s tumor.

The child was subjected to surgical interference. On exploration, the mass was in the retroperitoneal space adjacent to right kidney, enveloped in a thin membrane which proved by biopsy to be amniotic membrane. There was small artery attached directly to the aorta of the host. The vein draining in the IVC.

The mass had flat head with scanty hair, one upper limb with another small upper bud with two small lower limb buds.

Plain x-rays of the fetus shows well formed vertebral column, ribs and bones of upper and lower limbs (femur).

Ultrasonographic examination of the fetus shows liver, P.V, Kidneys and loop of the gut.

MRI shows a brain tissue with spinal cord and bones of the limbs.

The mass was diagnosed as a fetus in-fetu. Approximately 80 reports have been documented in the literature to date. This represents the case number 81 recorded in the literature for this condition up till now.
